Turmeric and Curcumin 101

Myths & Facts

All turmeric supplements are created equal.

Turmeric supplements require curcumin and black pepper(piperine) for efficacy. Curcumin, turmeric’s active component, varies in concentration across supplements. Lots of turmeric supplements only contain 3% curcuminoids, making them utterly pointless. A turmeric supplement made up of 95% curcuminoids is a winner. On its own, curcumin’s absorption is minimal, but piperine enhances its bioavailability by preventing breakdown in the gut. Quality varies; top-tier supplements are rigorously tested for purity and potency, ensuring safety and effectiveness. Adding MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) boosts benefits, leveraging its anti-inflammatory properties to complement curcumin and piperine’s effects

There’s no way a natural turmeric supplement is better than my prescribed medication.

Natural supplements like turmeric, curcumin, MSM, and black pepper are favoured for their minimal side effects, especially for those sensitive to medications. They offer a multi-targeted approach to inflammation, with compounds like curcumin inhibiting inflammatory pathways, and MSM reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. These supplements also provide essential nutrients and antioxidants, supporting overall health and immune function. Turmeric, for instance, contains bioactive compounds aiding in inflammation control and tissue repair. Their combined use leads to synergistic effects, with piperine from black pepper enhancing curcumin’s absorption and efficacy, offering a safe, long-term anti-inflammatory solution without the risks of tolerance or dependence.

A turmeric and curcumin supplement shouldn’t be given to children.

Turmeric and curcumin, known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, are safe for most, including children, when used correctly. Black pepper’s piperine boosts curcumin absorption, enhancing its health benefits. MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), a natural compound in all living organisms, is also safe and supports joint health. Turmeric, a culinary spice, and its component curcumin, are researched for health advantages. Their supplementation is popular due to their well-being support. Piperine in black pepper further increases curcumin’s bioavailability, ensuring more effective use by the body. MSM complements these effects, making it a common addition to turmeric supplements.

A turmeric and curcumin supplement won’t touch my arthritis or systemic inflammation.

Curcumin, turmeric’s active ingredient, is studied for its anti-inflammatory effects, potentially easing arthritis symptoms like pain and stiffness. It’s a potent antioxidant, countering oxidative cell damage. MSM supports joint health, reducing inflammation and boosting flexibility. Black pepper’s piperine enhances curcumin’s bioavailability, improving absorption and effectiveness. Turmeric and curcumin also benefit gut health, possibly mitigating IBD and IBS symptoms by lowering gut inflammation and fostering healthy gut flora. MSM contributes by supplying sulphur, vital for gut health and antioxidant synthesis. Together, MSM and curcumin offer amplified relief from inflammation and joint discomfort.
